The Espresso Martini on tequila — reposado's gentle oak warming the coffee and the foam.

The Tequila Espresso Martini builds the drink on reposado tequila. Lightly aged tequila brings a gentle oak-and-vanilla warmth that sits comfortably beside coffee — smoother than the mezcal version, sharper and more characterful than the vodka original.

The middle path between the vodka original and the mezcal riff.

Why Reposado

Blanco tequila can read sharp and vegetal against coffee; añejo can overwhelm it with oak. Reposado — rested a few months in barrel — sits in the middle, with just enough vanilla and spice to flatter the espresso without competing with it.

Agave and Coffee

Tequila's bright, peppery agave character cuts through the coffee liqueur's sweetness, giving the drink a cleaner finish than the vodka version. It is a riff that has quietly become a fixture of Mexican and modern bar menus alike.

A Coffee-Liqueur Choice

A coffee liqueur with real roast depth — rather than a thin, sugary one — matters here, since the tequila is not adding sweetness of its own. The drink wants the liqueur to carry both body and bitterness.
