Grapefruit Crush

The Orange Crush's most popular sibling — fresh-squeezed grapefruit in place of orange, for a tart, faintly bitter, blush-pink crush.

The Grapefruit Crush is the Orange Crush with grapefruit swapped in for the orange, and on much of the Eastern Shore it is ordered just as often as the original. Everything else holds — vodka, triple sec, a splash of lemon-lime soda over crushed ice — but fresh grapefruit gives it a tart, faintly bitter edge and a blush-pink colour the orange version never has.

Grapefruit's bitterness is the secret: it keeps a sweet, easy drink from ever getting cloying.

The Crush, Gone Pink

Once the Orange Crush proved that fresh-squeezed citrus over ice was the whole idea, the format was always going to spread to other fruit, and grapefruit was the obvious next step. The Grapefruit Crush is not a separately invented drink so much as the same template pointed at a different citrus — and a hugely successful one, to the point that crush menus from Ocean City to the Delaware beaches list it right beside the orange. Exact first-pour credit is undocumented; treat it as a regional offshoot of the 1995 original.

The Spec

Build it exactly like an Orange Crush, with fresh grapefruit juice doing the work of the orange. Grapefruit is more tart and less sweet, so a small measure of simple syrup is a fair option if your fruit is sharp — but taste first; a ripe grapefruit often needs nothing.

Let the Bitterness Stand

The whole appeal of the Grapefruit Crush is the gentle bitterness that orange lacks. Resist the urge to sugar it into submission — a touch of simple to take the edge off sharp fruit is fine, but a Grapefruit Crush that tastes like sweet soda has lost the plot. Pink grapefruit looks the part; white grapefruit is sharper still.
